Happy National Dollar Day

August 8, 2017: Today is National Dollar Day commemorating the day Congress established the U.S. monetary system in 1786. You have Alexander Hamilton to thank for that. Hamilton’s system gave the government the ability to issue paper money and eventually coins. Thomas Jefferson, among others, opposed the idea but it did lead us to be a world leader economically. The whole idea started as a way to pay off debts from the war.

Wonder what Hamilton would think of the national debt these days? While you and I wait for Congress to figure it out, we can at least try things to keep our own house in order. Don’t buy things you don’t need, only necessities. Download an app (there are several) that will automatically round up purchases to the next dollar and invest that spare change. Have a garage sale and save that money. A few pennies or dollars doesn’t seem like much, but it adds up over time quite nicely. You can do this.

Off to study more economic policy AND ways to bring that debt down. Have a great day …
